MAGNA CARTA @ ST EDMUNDSBURY CATHEDRAL | MAY 2014

Bury St Edmunds has a pivotal role in the history of the Magna Carta. It is believed that on 20th November 1214 a group of Barons met in St Edmunds Abbey Church and swore an oath to compel King John to accept the Charter of Liberties. As a celebration the Magna Carta itself will be tracing its original route into Bury St Edmunds and will be housed in the Cathedral for one month. The Magna Carta will provide an initial stimulus to prompt work in schools which will be integrated within the Light and Sound event in the town in October.
