early evening express
Our Early Evening Express Menu can also be chosen by guests booking between 5pm and 6pm Monday – Friday.
Three delicious courses and an arrival cocktail for £35pp make it the talk of the town amongst local foodies.
fish, chips and sips
Fish, Chips and Sips now available Monday to Saturday lunchtimes.
Traditional beer battered fish and chips, with a glass of the iconic Laurent-Perrier La Cuvee Champagne. The ultimate lunch, for just £25 per person
Pickwick Pie
The Pickwick Pie has become a firm favourite amongst the foodies of Suffolk. It is named after The Pickwick Papers, which were written at The Angel by our most famous former resident, Charles Dickens.
Savour slow-braised beef and red wine wrapped in shortcrust pastry, served with silky mash and root vegetables. The filling may change, but this mouth watering pie features proudly on our lunch and dinner menu daily.
Afternoon Tea
Traditional afternoon teas are served in the lounge, daily from noon. These include a selection of savouries, warm scones with homemade jam and clotted cream, and plenty of sweet treats.
Our afternoon teas are themed and change throughout the year. You can look forward to the following experiences:
1st March – 30th April – ‘Easter Afternoon Tea’ featuring seasonal flavours, delicate patisserie and playful twists on traditional favourites.
1st May – 31st October – ’60 Years of Gough Afternoon Tea’ – a gloriously indulgent retro afternoon tea, brimming with nostalgic favourites to celebrate 60 Years of Gough Hospitality.
1st November – 23rd December – ‘A Christmas Carol Afternoon Tea’ – a festive afternoon tea inspired by the charm, warmth and nostalgia of A Christmas Carol.
the bar
A beautiful interior with a copper-topped bar and stunning views over Angel Hill create a comfortable environment to unwind in, or to enjoy pre-dinner drinks.
Creative cocktails, fine wines, local draught beers and delicious bar snacks are all on offer. The extensive cocktail list includes most classics along with many in-house creations. Some of these are inspired by the wonderful characters and narratives from the work of Charles Dickens – our most famous former resident.
Wines are eclectic, taking in well-known regions and producers alongside intriguing pours that you may seldom see on other lists – with many of these available by the glass.
A short “Cellar List” of decadent bottles is available, and a “Special Pours” blackboard adorns the restaurant wall. Both encompass big-hitters you might be familiar with alongside examples from less well-known regions or producers.
Vibes are relaxed, with table service from our team. We do not take bookings in this area so please just take a seat, peruse a menu and we will be along to take your order.
Sunday Roasts
Sunday lunch is an iconic British favourite we take very seriously indeed. Each week, three meats from local farms are available, carefully prepared with all the traditional trimmings. Think Dingley Dell pork with homemade apple sauce, roast leg of local lamb, and of course a blushing-pink sirloin of Red Poll beef.
These Sunday roasts are served all day in the Eaterie from 12pm – 4pm, and again from 5pm – 9pm.
Demand to dine is high, so we’ve opened The Vaults every Sunday too, with bookings open between 12.30-2pm. Book early to dine in what is surely Suffolk’s most unique venue.
You can book a table for up to 9 guests online. Any tables of 10 or more need to be booked via our celebrations team. Please note, the maximum table size we can accommodate in the Eaterie is 14 guests on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, and a maximum of 28 guests Monday to Thursday. Larger groups should book private hire of the green room or The Vaults.
For tables of 6-9 guests, we ask for card details to confirm your booking. For tables of 10 or more, a non refundable deposit of £10 per person is required at booking stage.
Absolutely, we follow very strict allergen procedures. Please inform us of any allergies or intolerances your guests may have upon booking as well as upon ordering.
Unfortunately we cannot reserve tables for drinks in the bar. The bar is open every day, from 7am for morning coffee until 11pm for drinks. However, hotel residents are welcome to stay up later with drinks in the lounge.
Unfortunately, our eaterie and bar are not dog friendly, however we do welcome dogs into our lounge area. So, do give us a call if you’d like to dine with your pup and we will do our best to reserve a table for you to dine in the lounge.
